Hampton Roads Veterinary Hospice is proud to announce that the company’s founder, Dr. Tyler Carmack, has become one of the

first Certified Veterinary Hospice and Palliative Care Veterinarians in the world. The specialized veterinary practice has been providing veterinary hospice care, pet acupuncture, integrative medicine, in-home euthanasia services, and compassionate aftercare in the Hampton Roads community since 2011. The post-doctoral Animal Hospice and Palliative Care Certification Program is administered by the International Association for Animal Hospice and Palliative Care (IAAHPC). The inaugural class of veterinarians and veterinary technicians began the program in 2016 and have just completed their training requirements. With her completion of the program, Dr. Carmack is one of the first Certified Hospice and Palliative Care Veterinarians in the world and the only one in Southeastern Virginia.

Dr. Carmack is passionate about the need for veterinary hospice and palliative care and is honored to provide these services to pet families in the Hampton Roads region. Dr. Carmack stated that “Pet families truly appreciate the comfort-focused care that veterinary hospice can provide for geriatric or terminally ill patients. Being able to provide families with more personalized options to make their pet’s end of life journey a peaceful and respectful one is very rewarding. The advanced training the certification program has provided will allow us to do more for our patients and their families as well as to actively participate in the research and continued development of the veterinary hospice movement and the human hospice field.”

Hampton Roads Veterinary Hospice is also welcoming Dr. Jeanette Schacher as a full-time hospice veterinarian as the practice continues to expand their services. Dr. Schacher has been working with Hampton Roads Veterinary Hospice since 2015 and is currently pursuing her certification in veterinary acupuncture.
