Jake passed away quietly on June 26, 2021 after being diagnosed with a malignant melanoma. He was 14 years old. He was a miniature German Shepherd mixed with Husky born on Shell Road in Hampton, Virginia.
I still remember the day that he trotted into our lives on December 7, 2007. I fell in love with Jake, affectionately called “Jakey”, from the moment that I saw him. His former owners were walking him in front of the Post Office on Chesterfield Road in Hampton, VA. I stopped them to inquire where they had gotten him. They said that he was the last of a litter and they were holding him from some. Still, I wanted him so I gave them my phone number in case the plans changed. They said if he was not picked up the next day that I could have him. God heard me because he was still available the next day, and thus begin our great journey together.
For a dog his size, Jake was very agile. He was small but was able to jump fences greater than five feet with ease. Unfortunately, he did just that and quite often. 🙂 The first night that we got him, he jumped the fence during a rainstorm. We searched hours for him and finally found him. He has been jumping fences ever since.
Jake always brought comfort and joy, especially during difficult times. He gave me a reason to get out of bed every morning. He greeted me at the door every evening when I returned home from work. Jakey always provided comfort and unconditional love when it was most needed.
He was a beautiful, friendly dog that loved children. He never bit anyone and rarely even growled. Our home feels so empty without him. His patented “nose bumps” will be greatly missed. We are happy to know that he is “happily strutting around somewhere” and no longer in pain.
We are so grateful for the time that we had with him. We truly believe that having Jakey in our lives made life infinitely better. Jakey is gone but the love for and memories of him will never leave us.
