Schilling,

Fifteen years ago, you came into our lives at three months old. You have been a warrior from the very beginning. Having been born without a paw and rescued from a hoarder with fifteen other Springers, you somehow knew how to find the helpers. I saw your picture on MAESSR and knew instantly that you were meant to be ours forever.

Meeting you at the gas station in Baltimore, you looked so helpless but had so much love in your eyes. We quickly learned your “soft tissue damage” was actually you missing an entire paw, and so began your life of racking up vet bills. Charlotte taught you how to be a little brother and trained you in the ways of English Cocker life, eat everything. But you brought your own flair by being the absolute best snuggler.

As we had to say goodbye to others over the years, you were always the constant we could count on to comfort us and make us laugh. When Jack came into this world, you found a new role, big brother, and you were so good at it. You’ve watched over him for the past eleven years with patience and companionship… stealing a few burgers and nuggets from him along the way.

When you were paralyzed with IVDD four years ago, you were once again a warrior. Not many had faith in your recovery, but you showed us you weren’t ready to leave yet, and we were happy to fight for you. These past few years have been hard on your body, but you have remained the same constant best friend and the sweetest boy.

I’ve always thought you needed us, but I’ve finally realized how much we needed you. You’ve taught us the gift of unconditional love, patience, and gave us the greatest gift of laughter. We can see how tired you are now, and we understand that it’s time for you to go meet back up with those we’ve lost before you. Tell them hi for us. Your lessons will always remain here, surrounding us.

People always thought you were a goat. You may not have been a farm animal, but it’s true, you really are the greatest of all time. Rest easy, little merry wanderer, and thank you. Godspeed, my sweet boy. ❤️
